Cheris turning back time to reflect on her decades-long relationship with Sonny Bono.

“He got to be real with me because I didn’t expect anything.

I didn’t want money, I didn’t think about anything, you know.

And all these other women that were his age, they wanted him to be a grown up.”

She explained, “We [were] trying to get it right.

And I don’t think those [older] ladies wanted to do that.”

As their story goes, the couple first crossed paths in a coffee shop in 1962.

“I mean, everybody disappeared and it was just the two of us.

But he didn’t like me.

It wasn’t love at first sight, it wassomething.

I never felt it before.”

“He said, ‘You know, it’s possible for you to come and stay with me.’

And I was like, ‘OK,'” she recalled.

“And he went, ‘No, no.

I don’t find you particularly attractive.’

So I was upset and happy at the same time.”

And the first time he saw me in a bathing suit, his mouth dropped.

And his face was so sad."

Another reason the age gap didn’t complicate their dynamic?

Bono initially had no idea how old Cher actually was.

“I lied,” the singer admitted.

“I lied to him a few times.

And then I was 17.

And my mom told him she was gonna put him in jail.”

They tied the knot in 1964 and welcomed their only child, Chaz, in 1969.

They would finalize their divorce six years later.

As far as her stance on age-gap romance, Cher is currently dating music producer Alexander A.E.

Edwards, 38, and has no qualms about defending her tendency to date younger men.
