ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you go about adaptingErasure?

Unfortunately, with cinema, you have to condense it.
I would say that there’s a lot of changes from the book to the film.
That being said, there’s a certain textual playfulness from the book.

I think there’s some experimentation and some surreality in the book.
She said, I’ve been teachingErasurefor 20 years.
I loved this book so much.
So, to hear anErasurescholar praise the movie was a huge sigh of relief for me.
A lot of this has been overwhelming.
That was absolutely the opposite of how Jeffrey behaved.
He immediately wanted to work with me about developing the character, even before we started shooting.
What do you hope audiences take away from this film?
I hope that people walk out of the theater with a smile on their face.
On the last page of the novel, theres a Latin quote.
The rough translation is, I offer no hypothesis.
My favorite art doesn’t do that.
