How did you two go about building that dynamic?
MICHELLE WILLIAMS:Some of it is just chemistry, an intrinsic curiosity and openness to each other.

JENNY SLATE:I say you may.
I don’t know what it’s gonna be, but let’s see.
WILLIAMS:It was a love-at-first-sight situation.
So we really just got to build on that for the rest of the show.
WILLIAMS:We were.
We get our first look at their bond when Molly tells Nikki her cancer is back.
How did you navigate the high emotion and equal level of comedy?
WILLIAMS:That scene was like slaloming.
You’re just like, ‘Oh, there’s another bump and turn and another skier.’

It’s a lot of sharp trunks.
I wanna stay with the comedy of the show for a second.
Do either of you have a standout or favorite funny moment from the series?

We did so many takes of Molly saying she’s a “wee bit dry” in her vagina.
WILLIAMS:It’s so funny.
Jenny, how did you arc out how this decision would start affecting Nikki?
SLATE:I saw Nikki as someone who’s in a conical progression, or like a reverse cone.
She’s open, everything’s going out, and that’s her energy.
As the series goes on, her energy becomes succinct, and she has to keep it down deep.
Physically, we worked to pare Nikki down.
Then we stripped her jewelry off, most of the makeup that Nikki would wear.
I really, really love that.
I was honestly surprised.
I felt really sexy in all the sweatpants.
I’m curious about your take on how deeply Molly appreciated Nikki being her caretaker.
WILLIAMS:It’s so hard to ask for help, even when it’s your best friend.
Transaction is the wrong word, but the transmission between them.
What will you both take away fromDying for Sex?
WILLIAMS:What I’m thinking right now?
We get to share that forever.
We get to carry it into the rest of our real waking lives.
So I take the people.
SLATE:Oh, I love that.
I take with me the idea that I would rather have an opening than stay still with dusty expectations.
