The famous and beloved Sycamore Gap in Northumberland, England was discovered cut down on Thursday.

The 16-year-old boy remains in police custody and “is assisting officers with their enquiries,” authorities said.

“Given our investigation remains at a very early stage, we are keeping an open mind.”

‘Sycamore Gap’ tree on Hadrian’s Wall now lies on the ground, leaving behind only a stump in the spot it once proudly stood on September 28, 2023 northeast of Northumberland, England. The tree, which was apparently felled overnight, was one of the UK’s most photographed and appeared in the 1991 Kevin Costner film “Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves."

The beloved tree was voted English Tree of the Year in 2016 in the Woodland Trust’s awards.

North of Tyne Mayor Jamie Driscoll condemned the felling on social media.

“People have had their ashes scattered there.

People have proposed there.

I’ve picnicked there with my wife and kids.

It’s part of our collective soul.

We must bring whoever did this to justice.”
