ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you end up back on TV with this show?

Squid Game: The Challenge. Season 1

Netflix

I was like, “Maybe I should.

I love the series.”

I am pretty impatient I reached out to my fiance, “Should I apply for the show?”

I sent it in."

Didn’t think twice about it and I didn’t put too much effort into it either.

And now I’m here.

Had you applied for other reality shows afterSurvivor, or was this your first foray back into reality TV?

This is the first one.

It’s been seven years.

It reminds me of the GIF with theTitanicold lady that says, “It’s been 84 years.”

So what madeSquid Game: The Challengethe show to break your reality TV hiatus?

I loved everything about [Squid Game].

It was just such a surreal experience and a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

How did your time onSurvivorprepare you for this experience?

My paranoia levels were super low.

I was much more chill going into this experience.

Were you worried people would recognize you fromSurvivorand use that against you in this game?

Or were you hoping people would recognize you?

Who was the first person to recognize you?

The first player to recognize who I was was Dash, Player 141.

I was like, “What do I do?

Do I say yes?”

I just was like, “Yeah, hey,” and just went with it.

From there it spread like wildfire not necessarily from Dash.

And I was like, “Hopefully you’ve heard good things!”

Because unless viewers know who you are, it’s never actually said onscreen that you were onSurvivor.

When I think about this opportunity, it was evolutionary.

So it was a conscious choice by you?

It wasn’t that you were told by Netflix not to talk about a CBS show?

It’s the same thing withSurvivor, there’s only so much that can get shown.

Even thoughSurvivoris a big part of my life, with any show, things are going to get cut.

BetweenSurvivorandSquid Game,which was more difficult?

Which did you enjoy more?

That’s a tough question.

Psychologically, there’s also a difference.Survivor, I make alliances.

Relationships can make or break you in that game, and you’re paranoid.

It’s less plotting.

I found myself sometimes sayingSquid Gameis so much harder but I could make a fight for either one.

What was it like competing in Red Light, Green Light?

But we get there and it’s pretty cold.

you might’t expect that it’s just going to be that simple.

They have to make it challenging.

It’s not going to be handed to us.

So it was cold, I’ll never forget that.

They took it very seriously and were doing a very thorough job to see who was moving.

So holds could be 15 minutes.

Did you see any of that happening?

Production took care of people that needed that care.

It felt like it was very instant.

It was very, very cold, but I signed up for that.

I signed up for the challenge.

But production was very, very serious with whatever needed to be dealt with.

And I felt very appreciative of that because people were getting the help that they needed.

In reality TV in general, it takes a very long time to film things.

And that’s the same for any reality show.

What you see is not the full story.

I think that’s really powerful and really inspiring.

How happy were you to get circle in Dalgona?

Oh, my gosh.

We already knew it was going to be Dalgona when we walked in the room.

There are four lines.

It was on the wall in the dorm.

We knew it was coming.

4 is considered bad luck.

So we are not going in line four.

And my whole group was like, “Okay, let’s go in line one.”

And the second we saw that [it was circle], the celebration took over.

I have a guardian angel, and his name is James.

Again, relationships can take you very far, and it took me to line one.

But your luck ran out during Battleships.

When we were figuring out the line situation with warships, that was already messy.

I was like, “15 people for tug of war is a lot of people.”

In my line, I’m thinking about Chad, and he’s just really big, built guy.

I just don’t think they would."

I honestly did not want to go into the big boat.

And no one said anything.

I was like, “I’m just going to go with the flow here.

I trust in my team and there’s nothing I can do about it.

It is a game of luck.”

So I said nothing.

And then I was taken out.

Maybe if I moved my boat one up or something like that?

But I try my best not to look back at that moment and think, “What if?”

And then I got to a luck situation and it didn’t fall in the cards for me.

It looked like you and Trey, Player 301, got really close.

Was he your closest ally?

Because unlikeSurvivor, the relationships are going to help carry you to the end and help keep you sane.

I was close with Kwame.

I was close with so many people in the game, I could honestly go on.

I knew that if we could all work together, we would get as far as possible together.

Are you still close with them all today?

Oh, yeah, I’m definitely still close with them.

Weekly conversations are a thing.
