Holy ghosts, polar bears, and corpsicles, Batman!

What does it all mean and where will the season go from here?

EW caught up with showrunner and mastermindIssa Lopezto point us in the right direction.

True Detective: Night Country

Detectives Navarro (Kali Reis) and Danvers (Jodie Foster) in episode 1 of ‘True Detective: Night Country.'.Michele K. Short/HBO

What are we to make of that?

ISSA LOPEZ:Well, we have three instances of “she’s awake” in episode 1.

So all of this is connecting.

And who is “she”?

We know that something happened to Annie.

We have no clue at this moment.

Is all of that real or is everyone seeing things in these long winter nights?

I think that that’s one for you to tell me.

The moment that the series starts, it opens two ways for you to read it.

And one is everything has a rational explanation.

So you might pick whatever you prefer.

And she has a really, really strange moment of what is this doing here.

She obviously recognizes it, and touches it both with fear and tenderness.

And we will see in the future what covering one eye means in the series.

But that’s for later.

Will we learn who wrote it and why?

Will we know exactly who/when wrote that [on the whiteboard]?

Not necessarily, because my characters, the detectives, are not going to necessarily go throughallof those beats.

You write certain stuff sometimes that on paper reads incredible.

It was something like that, and it was the geek in me going like, “Yeah!”

I don’t know how you’re going to do that."

Lovecraft, who informs the cosmic horror, his most famous trick was indescribable horror.

That’s why the movies with cosmic horror are so hard.

So I’m doing exactly that.

I’m writing indescribable horror.

We see very little of the corpsicle in the first episode.

And then you start to discover the rest of the temple, let’s call it.

And that’s the origin of the corpsicle.

What can we expect in episode 2?

We’re going to get deeper into why dead people can sometimes show the way to our characters.

And we’re going to understand better what happened in the past of these characters, these two women.

True Detective: Night Countryairs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
