The eagles are coming!

That familiar cry fromThe HobbitandThe Lord of the Ringsusually means good news, i.e.

that the giant birds are coming to help the heroes in their fight against evil.

Against expectations, an eagle does appear!

Those viewers who are familiar with the story of Numenor fromJ.R.R.

Tolkiens writing know that Ar-Pharazon being in charge of Numenor means dark days ahead for the island kingdom.

But Tolkiens text has more information about the eagles place in Middle-earth.

Middle-earth is watched over by spirits called the Valar, and the leader of that pantheon is Manwe.

All swift birds, strong of wing, he loves, and they come and go at his bidding.

Because of this, eagles are interpreted as a sign of Manwes approval.

Miriel and Ar-Pharazon are also old friends, which makes this betrayal sting harder.
